Fletcher Jones Professor of Computer Science (and, by courtesy, of Electrical Engineering)
Interests: Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Programming, and Statistical Computing
Golub's work in matrix computation devises and analyzes algorithms for solving numerical problems arising in science and statistics. Specifcally, he develops algorithms for solving linear systems with special structure, computes eigenvalues of sequences of matrices, and estimates functions of matrices.
Ph.D. Illinois 1959
Major distinctions: B. Bolzano Gold Medal for Merits in the Field of Mathematical Sciences, Member of the National Academy of Sciences (1993).
